Ask The Body Mechanic where their philosophy begins and the answer isn’t anatomy.
“Everything is an extension of the divine. Existence, reality, the universe – everything comes from one origin point in space, time, and consciousness.”
They don’t present this as a scientific claim so much as the worldview that shapes every decision inside The Body Mechanic Body Shoppe. If every person carries something sacred, then the body itself deserves to be treated as sacred – not because it is perfect, but because it is entrusted to us.
“We’re fragile bone puppets. Electric bags of wet muscles, fascia, and tendons held together by this living tissue we call skin.”
The contradiction is intentional. The body is both miraculous and mechanical. Sacred and biological. Divine and imperfect. Stewardship, in their view, is the practice of holding all these truths and honoring them together. The science and the metaphysics, the artistry and the precision.
The Body Mechanic exists to tend to these realities with craftsmanship, intention, and respect.
“I’m here to tend to these divine meat machines we pilot. They truly are temples, and they require compassionate, thoughtful maintenance.”
About the Shoppe
The Body Shoppe began with a simple premise – bring bodywork to people in the Philadelphia area who need it the most, where they need it that most.
“As a retail veteran myself, I know how many days I barely made it into work due to leg and back pain. Whether you’re sitting at a desk all day or doing heavy labor, our bodies pay a terrible toll for the work we do.”
The Body Shoppe was created to meet people in their spaces, either on the job or in the privacy of their own homes. Particularly – artists, artisans, tradespeople, laborers, and professionals of all kinds. It’s not always easy to set time aside for self-care. The Body Mechanic believes self-care should be able to work around your schedule.
“You don’t need to live in pain and you don’t need to sacrifice the longevity of your career because your free time is sacred.”
John was particularly drawn to two ideas. The first was tailoring the practice towards the needs of tattoo artists:
“I’d seen how much pain my tattoo artist friends were all in, helped a few with their forearms, their necks, their heads, their legs, their backs – pretty much head to toe trigger points. I knew there was a real need out there and that these artist and artisans’ long-term careers are going to hinge on how bodywork they are receiving on the regular today.”
The second, was the realization that no everyone found the same music and aesthetic relaxing.
“Maybe someone doesn’t want to listen to spa music? Maybe they’d rather listen to doom metal?”
These came together to form a very different kind of Massage practice.

John’s life path has been long and winding. But all roads have converged into Massage Therapy. The two decades spent managing retail operations of all shapes and sizes. The decade spent as a filmmaker and co-founder of multimedia company 1193 Productions, LLC. The lifetime spent studying science, philosophy, spirituality, and mysticism. It all culminates in bodywork.
“I was at a crossroads. I went as far as managing other people’s businesses would take me. I no longer wanted to containment art with Capitalism. I was sick of giving my time, energy, and talents to businesses that didn’t care about me and corporations who only took from the world. I just knew I wanted to work with my hands and I wanted to heal. Some of my earliest memories are me performing bodywork on others. It’s been a part of nearly every familial, platonic, and romantic relationship I’ve ever had. It was the most natural career pivot I could have made.”
Now John Michael Neal, aka “The Body Mechanic“, is a Licensed Massage Therapy operating in the Greater Philadelphia area. Their practice is tailored towards creatives, artisans, tradespeople, and laborers whose careers are causing harm to their bodies.
“Being a full-time healer was such a natural progression for me. I’ve been walking an Enlightened path for so long, been trying to figure out how to live a holy life while still participating in modern society, living under Capitalism. It’s felt like I’ve reached my destination. It was the easiest difficult choice I’ve ever had to make.“
